The Lakes International Comics Art Festival

Recently seen comic related websites where contributors grumbled about comic conventions being taken over by film and television, manifested in the form of attendance at the event by actors who at some stage in their career appeared in a sci-fi or fantasy movie or TV series. Came across one convention organiser who when asked about guests to be attending his convention saw fit to first reel off a list of, mostly aging, actors - no mention of any comic book creators.
Don't despair. An antidote to this trend is The Lakes International Comic Art Festival. October 18th - 20th
The guests there are from comics, talented, genuine creators and as follows.
Charlie Adlard - Steve Bell - Hannah Berry - Dan Berry - Doug Braithwaite - Gareth Brookes - Ed Brubaker - Kurt Busiek - Kate Charlesworth - Stephen Collins - Darryl Cunningham - Rob Davis - Al Davison - Andy Diggle - Glyn Dillon - Pete Doherty - Graham Dury - Hannah Eaton - Hunt Emerson - Kate Evans -Carlos Ezquerra - Duncan Fedgredo - Karrie Fransman - Simon Fraser - Paul Gravett - Katie Green - Isobel Greenberg - Steven Harris - Morris Heggie - David Hine - Ilya - Inko - Owen Johnson - David Lloyd - John McNaught - Robbie Morrison - Jose Munoz -Pau - Luke Pearson - Ivan Petrus - Sean Phillips - Gary Pleece - Warren Pleece - Andy Poyiadgi - Trina Robbins - Joe Sacco - Gilbert Shelton - Posy Simmons -Nicola Streeten - Bryan Talbot - Mary Talbot - Dave Taylor - Ravi Thorton - Simon Thorpe - John Wagner - Ian Williams - Nye Wright - Oscar Zarate.

Their website is visually a good deal more interesting than this blog. http://www.comicartfestival.com/

Attended "Nerdfest" in Nottingham the other Saturday - a good show of artists there including a great panel by Lee Sullivan and Marc Laming, a healthy presence of small independent publishers too; I'd go again!

Hullo Andy,

my impression is that the TV/ movie celebrity appearance is an American phenomena. Certainly all the grumbles about it I've seen have been from US sources.
Sean Phillips, Bryan and Mary Talbot, who are the brains behind the Lakes festival, have European comic events as a model.
And well done Nottingham organisers by the sound of it.

All the best,
Arthur
