In Japan on Christmas Day 10 gift filled expensive leather satchels were left as a donation in front of  the Chuo Child Consultation Centre, a child welfare centre in Gunma Prefecture. A note from the donor was signed Naoto Date, later identified as the hero of a popular wrestling comic book, or manga, created by writer Ikki Kajiwari and artist Naoki Tsuji for the publisher Kodansha's Bokura magazine 1968. It later became a TV
animation series.
Naoto Date fights under the professional name of Tiger Mask. In his role as a baddie in the ring he is extremely vicious. When at the orphanage of  his childhood he meets  a young boy wanting to become a bad guy like Tiger Mask. Not wanting the boy to idolize a villain, Tiger is inspired to become an heroic wrestler and donates his money to the orphanage. This infuriates the leader of the Tiger’s Cave, a mysterious organization  training youngsters to be villainous wrestlers in return for half of their future earnings. The villain sends assassins, including other professional wrestlers, to punish Tiger Mask.
Child welfare institutions and consultation centres in cities across Japan continue to  receive school bags or cash gifts from Naoto Date and other manga characters.
Isn’t that heart-warming?
