Exhibition - Will Eisner’s New York: From The Spirit to the Modern Graphic Novel -

The Will Eisner’s New York exhibition refers to the influence on Eisner of his hometown New York in all eras of his work. A creative pioneer of  the “golden age” comics of the 1930s and ’40s Will Eisner ( 1917 - 2005) come to prominence with his crime fighting superhero, THE SPIRIT. In 1952 when The Spirit ceased publication Eisner worked on producing instructional comics then in 1978 reinventing himself - and, some suggest, the medium - with his graphic novel A CONTRACT WITH GOD, the first of a series of works dealing with Jewish life in early 20th century America. There were more graphic novels and at the time of his death, Eisner was working on THE PLOT which was released posthumously.
The related exhibition - From The Spirit to the Modern Graphic Novel - features art from creators who were influenced by him over seven decades: Neal Adams, Sergio Aragones, Terry Beatty, Nick Cardy, Darwyn Cooke, Eric Drooker, Jules Feiffer, Michael T. Gilbert, Dean Haspiel, Al Jaffee, Klaus Janson, Jack Kirby, Denis Kitchen, Joe Kubert, Peter Kuper, Harvey Kurtzman, Batton Lash, Steve Leialoha, Michael Avon Oeming, Peter Poplaski, Joe Quesada, Paul Rivoche, Trina Robbins, Jerry Robinson, Stan Sakai, Mark Schultz R. Sikoryak, Art Spiegelman, and Wally Wood.
Also on continuous view will be Jon and Andrew Cooke’s award-winning 2007 documentary, Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artist.
Lucky for comic-loving New Yorkers - which most visitors here will only score one out of two for. It is though always worth drawing attention to Will Eisner.
